25 Jun 2017, Vredenburg: In order to ensure that offenders are brought to book, an off-duty police official reacted swiftly after a business owner of Vredenburg was robbed at the corners of Mark and School Street, Vredenburg yesterday(Friday, 2017-06-23) at about 14:30.
The business owner was at the mentioned address busy with the pay-outs of his workers, when three unidentified men approached him and demanded his money. They were armed - one with a firearm and the other two with knives.
The business owner wrestled with one of the men armed with a knife, when he was stabbed in both arms. The suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. One of the victim’s workers started to chase the suspects.
Off-duty Sergeant Juan Thiart of Vredenburg FCS saw the incident and arrested one of the suspects. The firearm, a .22 revolver was recovered. The other two suspects are still at large. Fortunately the victim was not badly injured.
The arrested 45 year old suspect will appear in the Vredenburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, 26 June 2017, facing charges of armed robbery and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.
It is part of the SAPS's strategy to provide effective and responsive policing to all in our communities and the Sergeant is commended for placing himself on duty and for his vigilance to bring yet another criminal to book.
