24 Oct 2017, Cape Town: olice minister Fikile Mbalula releases the 2016/2017 annual crime statistics. Police Minister Fikile Mbalula has revealed that contact crimes dropped 3.3% in the last year.

The minister says that the majority of these crimes are social in nature, which makes it difficult for police alone to reduce the levels.

Mbalula is presenting the latest crime statistics in Parliament this morning.

According to the figures, murder - of which there were 19,016 cases - has increased by 1.8% and sexual offences have decreased by 4.3%.

In 2016/2017, the number of reported rape cases has decreased by 4% compared to the previous year, while there has been a 0.9% increase in the number of sexual assaults reported to police.
