SAPS NEWS: TWO MEN ARRESTED FOLLOWING A SHOOTING INCIDENT AT AN INFORMAL SETTLEMENT IN PHILIPPI

18 Apr 2018, Cape Town: The SAPS is working tirelessly to combat crime and bring perpetrators to book. Following the lengthy investigation of a case of attempted murder, the Philippi Police, with the assistance of the National POP Reserve Unit, arrested two male suspects aged 54 and 57.

This took place this morning (Tuesday, 2018-04-17) shortly after 09:00 at the suspects’ respective homes in Grassy Park. Firearms and ammunition alleged to have been used in the execution of the crime were seized. A third suspect is soon to be arrested.

The arrest and seizure came following a shooting incident that occurred on Saturday 6 January 2018 at about 17:40 at Egoli Informal Settlement in Philippi.

A group of males opened fire on a group of residents of Egoli Informal Settlement, wounding a 30 year old woman in her stomach and buttocks, and a 45 year old man in his legs, back and on the side of his head. A dog was also fatally wounded.

Both suspects were detained at Phillippi SAPS and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 2018-04-19 On a charge of attempted murder. The police investigation continues.

In an unrelated incident on 2018-04-17 at about 00:05 members of the Flying Squad were performing stop and search operations in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain, when they found a suspect in possession of a firearm and ammunition.

A Browning 7.65 mm and five live rounds were seized. The arrested suspect was detained at Mitchell’s Plain SAPS on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 2018-04-19, on the said charges.

The members involved in both these incidents are commended for their crime fighting efforts that have resulted in the arrests and seizures. Police will continue working around the clock to apprehend the perpetrators of crime and bring them to book.
