14 Dec 2017, Cape Town: The thorough investigation of crime and the bringing of perpetrators before court is crucial in the efforts of the SAPS to ensure convictions. This was shown again when a 31 year old man of Grassy Park was sentenced to an effective 23 years imprisonment for pre-meditated murder after he had strangled his 71 year old father to death on 2016-11-07.

The accused, Jonathan Schapira, was sentenced on a charge of pre-meditated murder after it was established that his father did not die of natural causes, but was actually strangled to death.

On 2016-11-07 the police was called out to a scene in Zeekoevlei and an inquest was opened. Detective Sergeant Ricardo Goldsmith received information that the accused had planned to kill his father, because the deceased was going to disown him out of his will. On 2016-11-23 an autopsy revealed that the deceased had indeed been strangled.

Following a lengthy investigation, the suspect was sentenced on 2017-12-04 in the Cape Town High Court on related charges.

The Branch Commander of the Grassy Park Detective Services, Lieutenant Colonel Ettiene Van Ede, expressed his gratitude to Sergeant Goldsmith for his brilliant investigation and his commitment to the fight against crime. The police is working around the clock to prevent and combat crime.

On 2017-12-07 a second suspect in the case, aged 31, was arrested by the Serious and Violent Crime team. He faces charges of pre-mediated murder and appeared in court on 2017-12-11. He is currently being detained in Pollsmoor.
