20 Feb 2018, Kwa-Zulu Natal: Today at 13:00, the members of the Durban K9 unit and Durban Flying Squad were following up the information about the suspects travelling in a white Mercedes Benz SUV who were involved in a number of robberies in the Kloof and Pinetown areas.

The members spotted the vehicle and attempted to intercept it near Lahee Park in Pinetown but they came under fire from the suspects who were speeding towards the M13 highway.

The suspects started to fire gunshots at the police and they retaliated. The driver of the vehicle lost control of the vehicle causing it to crash and overturn on the M13 highway.

A total of five suspects aged between 25 and 35 died at the scene while the sixth one sustained serious injuries. Three firearms with its serial number filed off, were recovered from the suspects.

Two television sets, two digital cameras and a laptop were found inside the suspects’ vehicle believed to have been stolen during the house robberies. It is alleged that suspects had been involved in more than two house robberies, today.

The injured suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. He will be charged for attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of stolen property and house robbery. He will appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court after being discharged from hospital.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa applauded the team for the recovery of firearms and expressed his relief that the members escaped the shooting unharmed.

“We cannot be threatened by criminals and we will ensure that we protect the citizens of this country and retaliate when ambushed by heartless lawbreakers,” he said.
