SAPS NEWS: Harsh Sentence for Rape Suspect according to SA Police

MTHATHA: "We welcome the sentence and commend the investigating officer for his commitment and dedication on his duties. It is only through hard work that one can see the suspect sentenced for so many years. The SAPS is committed to protect women and children from being abused by men," said the Acting Cluster Commander of Mthatha, Brigadier Mandlakhe Twala after a 36-year-old man was
convicted and sentenced at Mthatha High Court on Monday the 18 February 2018.
On the 12 November 2016 at about 15h15, a 35-year-old woman was on her way to her friend's home at Mhlakulo locality in Tsolo when she met with a 36-year-old man who offered to direct her to the friend's home. The court heard that on the said day it was drizzling and misty. The suspect forcefully took the victim to the forest where he assaulted, repeatedly raped and robbed her.
During his sentencing on Count 1 ( Kidnapping) he was sentenced to undergo 5 years imprisonment, Count 2 (Robbery) he was sentenced for 15 years, Count 3 (Assault GBH) was withdrawn, Count 4 (Rape) was sentenced for 22 years, Count 5 (Assault GBH) was sentenced for 3 years and Count 6 Rape) was sentenced for 22 years. Count 1,2,4 and 5 will run concurrently with Count 6.
