THIS IS AN OPEN LETTER TO THE FATHER OF THE BOY WHO KILLED MY DAUGHTER

16 May 2017, Cape Town: Thank you to everybody, friends and strangers alike, for all your help and Support since my daughter Tahlia's life was taken so tragically two weeks ago.

Can I ask you one more time, please change your settings to Public and Share this. All we want is justice.

This is an open letter to the father of the boy who killed my daughter:

I know who you are, Mr ex police officer. You know who I am. The paths of our children collided in tragedy, at the Swartkoppies and Kliprivier intersection on Friday evening, 28 April 2017.

My daughter had no choice in the matter. Your son however, chose to get behind the wheel of a car while extremely intoxicated, and drive through a red robots at high speed.

Is it not your moral duty to see that he is held accountable, and in the process, make sure that he never does this again?

I want you to know that the fact that you have law enforcement connections, will not entitle your son to get away with his reckless lifestyle forever.

All indications are that, unless he is stopped, and it doesn’t appear to be you that is going to stop him, he will continue with his blatant disregard for human life.

Will you have done your job as a father if/when the next blood he spills is his own. Do you realise that enabling him to get away with this kind of behaviour stains your own hands?

My daughter became a statistic. I am here to tell you that she had a name, a face, a life. I want you to know what your son took from us. He took from us our Tahlia. Tahlia was 19. Tahlia was beautiful, inside and out. Tahlia was loved, valued and an integral part of her community. Tahlia still called me mama when she wanted something.

Tahlia had a heart bigger than many I’ve ever known and, given the opportunity, may even have forgiven your son, had she lived and had he shown any remorse.

Tahlia had completed her matric last year. Tahlia was teaching, studying and also planning on a 6 month teaching stint in China in the near future.

Tahlia has a father whose spirit seems to have been broken forever by this. Tahlia has a brother and sister whose smiles never quite seem to reach their eyes anymore.

Please, do the right thing.

UPDATE:

The father of the boy involved in the collision has indicated, both in word and deed, his willingness to make sure that his son faces the consequences of his actions. If this includes him admitting that he was drunk at the time of the accident, justice will be served.
