An 80 year old man was shot during a botched hijacking and robbery in Tongaat - KZN a short while ago.

At approximately 16:40 Reaction Unit South Africa received a call from a member of public reporting the incident. The caller explained that the elderly man was known to them and had assisted six of her staff with a lift from their business in Tongaat to Conttonlands near Verulam when the hijacking occurred in the Gwalas Farm area.

One of her staff managed to call her and informed her of the incident when she contacted RUSA for assistance.

Reaction Officers proceeded to the scene and located the Isuzu bakkie as well as the 6 females. They explained that while travelling on the dirt road they came across boulders blocking their path of travel.

When the bakkie stopped an armed suspect exited the sugar cane and shot the driver in his arm.

Three other suspects emerged from a Mercedes Benz that was parked in the vicinity and robbed the woman of R77 000 of their stokvel money which they had withdrawn from a bank in Tongaat earlier today.

The suspects attempted to steal the bakkie however abandoned the vehicle after they failed to start it. They then fled the scene in the Mercedes Benz. The victim was transported privately to hospital by a passerby who stopped to assist. The woman were not injured during the shooting.

The money that was stolen was a joint annual investment which several people contribute towards on a monthly basis. The money is withdrawn in December and shared among the contributors a few days before Christmas.

Reaction Officers conducted an extensive search for the suspects however no
arrests were made.
