4 Oct 2017, Bloemfontein: A woman was killed and five others injured this morning when a truck and light motor vehicle collided on the N8, approximately 25km outside of Bloemfontein.
ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene at approximately 11h00. A truck was found parked in the road while a light motor vehicle had come to a stop on the side of the road.
Upon closer inspection, paramedics found the body of a woman lying outside the truck. Assessments showed that the woman showed no signs of life. Unfortunately, the woman had already succumbed to her multiple injuries. Nothing could be done for her and she was declared dead on the scene.
Five other patients were found on the scene. A man was found lying trapped inside the truck while two others were found trapped inside the light motor vehicle. Two others were found lying outside the light motor vehicle.
Rescue services had to use specialized tools to free the trapped patients from the vehicles. Once freed, paramedics assessed the patients and found that the injuries sustained ranged from moderate to critical.
Paramedics treated the patients and provided the critically injured with advanced life support interventions.
Once treated, one of the critically injured patients was airlifted by a Provincial Medical Helicopter to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. The remaining patients were transported by ambulance to various hospitals for further treatment.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
