7 May 2018, Free State: The Free State Emergency Medical Services personnel got a call at about 02h30am in the early hours of Monday morning. (Photos in Gallery below)

They were asked to respond to cry for help where a Taxi had veered off the road and overturned between Gariepdam and Orange river bridge on the N1 South of Free State.

The injured people were transported to Albert Nzula District Hospital. Upon arrival at the scene, the EMS personnel determined that 2 patients had serious injuries, 4 had moderate injuries and 8 people died on the scene of the accident and 1 in Albert Nzula Hospital in Trompsburg.

There were 2 other patients who were critical and had been airlifted to Pelonomi Hospital where 1 female patient later died whilst the driver who is a male is in a critical but stable condition.

The total number of fatalities is now standing at 10.

The law enforcement agencies investigation is going on as to the source of the accident. All passengers were female and the only male is the driver.

The names of the injured cannot be released up until all next of kin have been notified and consent is given as they may prefer.

The MEC for Health, Butana Komphela (MPL) has expressed shock at this unfortunate incident and will be making contact with the next of kin of the patients and the deceased.

"I send my condolences to the families and loved ones of both the injured and the deceased. I thank the EMS personnel for their selfless service and their swift response to the call for duty at such darkest hours of day", he said.
