11 Jul 2018, Cape Town:

Media Statement from Western Cape Media Centre
Corporate Communication and Liaison
South African Police Service

The thorough investigation of crime and the bringing of perpetrators before court is crucial in the efforts of the SAPS to ensure convictions. This occurred again today, Tuesday 2018-07-10, when Moegamat Farouk Oliver, a member of the Hard Living gang, was sentenced to 25 years effective imprisonment in the Khayelitsha Priority Court.

The Manenberg SAPS's serious violent crimes unit investigated the murder of a

rival gang member. This resulted in Moegamat Farouk Oliver receiving 25 years imprisonment for the murder of a 16 year old youth.

On 9 September 2017 SAPS members attended to a murder scene on the corners of Red River and Renoster Roads, Manenberg, where they found the body of the 16 year old with multiple gunshot wounds in his upper body. This brutal murder was committed in the heart of the community where it is difficult to get any witnesses or gather evidence. It was a case of starting an investigation blind. The serious violent crimes unit canvassed the area, piecing together evidence and eventually making an arrest. The 16 year old youth, a member of the American gang, was shot metres away from his home. He succumbed due to injuries he sustained during the shooting.

Moegamat Farouk Oliver was sentenced as follows:

  • 25 years for murder;
  • 10 years for the illegal possession of a firearm;
  • Two years for the illegal  possession of ammunition;
  • 12 years for being an accessory after the fact!
  • Five years for his affiliation to a gang; and
  • Five years for being actively involved in a gang.

The sentences will run concurrently.

The Western Cape Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Burger, commended the members and said that the successful investigation was the culmination of hard and dedicated team work. It took the serious violent crimes unit detectives six weeks from the suspect's first appearance to finalise the case. This is true dedication by our young team of seasoned detectives. These detectives give hope to the community that we can beat gang violence. Major General Burger called for the continued support from every member of the community that lives in the Manenberg precinct, so that a safe environment can be created for all.

Anyone with information regarding any criminal activity in the Manenberg area is kindly requested to contact Manenberg SAPS at 021 699 9400 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
