Western Cape: Efforts to address contact crimes in the Nyanga policing precinct continue to produce positive results. Ten suspects were apprehended over the weekend for crimes ranging from murder, rape, possession of unlicensed firearms to hijacking.

Four of the suspects were apprehended on Friday night in Browns Farm in possession of a vehicle they had allegedly hijacked earlier in Samora Machel. An unlicensed firearm they allegedly used during the incident was also confiscated. The four, aged between 24 and 31, are appearing in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court today on charges of hijacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm. A 20 year old suspect is also appearing in Wynberg Magistrates’ Court today facing rape charges.

Six other suspects are expected to appear in the Athlone and Wynberg Magistrates’ Courts this week facing charges of murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and rape. One of the six was arrested in Philippi in possession of an unlicensed firearm and another one, aged 32, was arrested yesterday after he allegedly raped a 14 year old girl in Philippi East. Three of the suspects were apprehended for cases of murder and two aged 27 and 31 were also arrested on Sunday after they allegedly stabbed and assaulted a 22 year old man on Saturday evening in Crossroads. The victim later died in hospital. The last suspect, aged 28 years was also arrested on Sunday evening after he had allegedly stabbed a woman on Sunday night in Cossovo. This victim also died on arrival in hospital.

Another suspect, was arrested in the early hours of today when he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The members were on patrol in Sheffield Road when they noticed a Toyota Quantum driver who had something looking like a firearm in his possession. To ascertain whether it was indeed a firearm members stopped the driver and asked to search him.   It was confirmed that he indeed had a firearm. When questioning the driver said it was his firearm but could not produce his license. When members tested the firearm they discovered that it had been reported stolen in 2001 in Guguletu. The suspect is also expected to appear in Athlone Magistrates’ Court this week for the illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm.
