In a concerted effort to deal with the scourge of sexual offences head on, the police in this province continue to acquire the heavy jail terms from various courts through the hard work, skilful and professional investigation teams of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Units.

This became evident when the accused Kgotso Dzhivhuwo aged 37 was this week sentenced to three

life terms for rape cases by the Dzanani Regional Court outside Thohoyandou.

These long jail terms emanated from the rape ordeals which took place in distinct places during 2013 and 2015. A 38-year-old woman from Mawoni village was raped by the accused on 23 November 2013 at about 19:30 while she was on her way home from work.

Kgotso approached the victim as if he wanted to accompany her but she was just got amused when a stone struck her face. She fell down and the accused dragged her to the nearby bushes and threatened her before raping her.

The accused further dragged the victim to another spot where he further repeatedly raped her.

Meanwhile on 14 March 2015 at about 19:20, a 27-year-old woman from Makongodza village was also raped by the same accused Kgotso Dzhivhuwo.

This second victim was walking along the street with a family member and a friend, when an unknown man suddenly struck her with a stone. She fell down and sustained injuries on her leg. The two people she was with ran away and the suspect dragged her to the nearby bushes. He then threatened her with a knife and raped her. While he was busy with the ordeal, he heard voices of the people calling the victim. He stopped and fled the scene.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Jim Ledwaba has applauded the investigating teams which tackled these cases in ensuring that this rapist was arrested and subsequently sent to jail forever.

"This sentencing came handy to the society in general as we are currently in the "16 Days of Activism on no violence against women and children. We hope that this long incarceration will bring a relief to his victims and it will also serve as a deterrent to all the rapists and rapists to be out there that crime does not pay", concluded General Ledwaba.
