9 Sep 2017, Eastern Cape: The SAPS National Soccer Championships was hosted by the Eastern Cape the past week. Ten teams, representing the nine provinces and Head Office participated in the championships.

Last night the winners were awarded at the Gala Dinner. The SAPSFA President, Maj Gen Mothlala addressed and the guests and commended the teams for participating in the crime awareness drive in the CBD earlier this week.

Maj Gen Mothlala also expressed his hope that one day the SAPS Soccer team can compete in the PSL and boasts that the SAPS have six referees in the PSL.

The President of SAFA, Dr Jordaan was also present and he acknowledged the leadership of the SAPS especially that of Deputy National Commissioner, Lt Gen Kruser. “It is always good to be back in the city of Port Elizabeth.

From the football perspective, the police is doing an incredible job but we need to now start to integrate the SAPS team into the National level. Hope to see an SAPS member playing in the Bafana Bafana team” added Dr Jordaan.

Lt Gen Kruser delivered a keynote address saying “Our purpose here today is to honour the significance of sports and the physical wellbeing of men and women in blue.

The role of sports, exercising and maintaining oneself in the profession of policing, can never be over emphasised. I was very impressed with the level of soccer that I have seen during this tournament.

Certain provinces played excellent football. As management we need to get more involved in sports. It is very enlightening to see the sporting codes growing from strength to strength.”

The following awards were presented:
Best Goalkeeper - Const Mokoena (Free State); Best Striker - Const Motlokoa (Free State); Most Improved Team - Mpumalanga; Player's Player of the Tournament and Player of the Tournament - Const Zulu (Mpumalanga);
