WATCH: WESTERN CAPE ROAD DEATH TOLL HAS EXCEEDED THAT OF LAST YEAR, KENNY AFRICA

26 Dec 2017, Cape Town: The death toll on Western Cape roads has exceeded the 100 mark from the beginning of this month to date.

Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa says, “The death toll has exceeded the of last year and stands at 114. That’s 114 too many deaths on the road. We don’t want any fatalities.”

Traffic authorities have urged motorists to obey the rules of the road.

Last weekend (16 - 17 Dec), 24 000 vehicles were recorded passing through the Huguenot Tunnel leaving Cape Town with 14 000 entering. Provincial traffic authorities say driving behaviours remains a major concern.

The number of pedestrian deaths are also alarming at 51 for the month to date. Authorities say they will remain on high alert throughout the festive season.
