EASTER WEEKEND CARNAGE: STATISTICS INDICATES NEARLY 100 FATALITIES MORE THAN 2017

17 Apr 2018, South Africa: The Minister of Transport has released the preliminary safety report into the Easter period.

Despite efforts by role players to reduce fatalities and crashes unfortunately an increase in number of vehicles involved in fatalities over the Easter period this year is 430 compared to 349 in 2017.

Human factors contributed 89.5 to crashes as compared to the 74.3 in 2017. The DOT noted with concern an increase in number of young people & middle age individuals who died as pedestrians.

pedestrians affected by fatalities increased from 33.8% in 2017 - 37.3% in 2018. Also an increase on number of drivers killed from 20.5% in 2017 - 25.6% with passengers declined from 43% in 2017 - 35.5% in 2018.

Fatalities per province:


  • Gauteng - 89
  • KZN - 111
  • Western Cape - 34
  • Eastern Cape - 59
  • Free State - 27
  • Mpumalanga - 49
  • North West - 34
  • Limpopo - 80
  • Northern Cape - 27
