3 Sep 2017, Cape Town: CAMPS BAY - At 16h16, Saturday, 02 September, NSRI Bakoven duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following eye-witness reports of at least 6 persons swept off a rock by waves at Maidens Cove, Glen Beach, Camps Bay.
NSRI rescue swimmers in the vicinity at the time responded directly to the scene and the NSRI Bakoven sea rescue craft Rotarian Schipper and the NSRI Table Bay sea rescue craft Spirit of Day and Spirit of Vodacom were launched.
An NSRI Table Bay rescue vehicle was also dispatched and Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services dive unit, Community Medics, WC Government Health EMS, Law Enforcement, the SA Police Services, the AMS/EMS Skymed rescue helicopter and ER24 ambulance services responded.
On NSRI rescue swimmers arriving on the scene they found bystanders assisting a woman, aged in her late teens, from Bloemfontein, and believed to be a student from a Bellville University, out of the water from in amongst the rocks and the bystanders had initiated CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) efforts and an NSRI rescue swimmer continued with CPR on his arrival.
Other bystanders were assisting those swept off the rocks out of the water after they had also fallen in between the rocks by waves.
On paramedics and emergency services arriving on the scene CPR on the woman continued on the scene before she was transported to hospital by ambulance with paramedics continuing with CPR in the ambulance. On arrival at hospital doctors and nurses continued with CPR but after all efforts to resuscitate the woman were exhausted she was declared deceased by doctors.
The cause of death remains unknown and Police have opened an inquest docket.
Another 2 of the persons swept off the rocks and who are friends of the deceased woman were not injured and it appears that other people who were swept off the rock had managed to clamber up the rocks and out of danger and they were not injured.
Eye-witnesses described seeing six people standing on a rock close to the waters edge in the incoming tide and the eye-witnesses, from Tamboerskloof, watched as a wave swept over the six people washing them off of the rock. The eye-witnesses raised the alarm immediately.
