LOCAL MAN SADLY DIED IN A BOATING ACCIDENT IN THE KOWIE RIVER MOUTH ON SATURDAY MORNING

27 May 2018, Port Alfred, Eastern Cape: At 06h42, Saturday, 26th May, NSRI Port Alfred duty crew were activated following reports of a boat capsized by waves in the Kowie River Mouth while exiting the harbour to go to sea with 2 men onboard.

The sea rescue craft Rescue 11 Alpha was launched and our sea rescue vehicle with NSRI rescue swimmers, EC Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services responded to East Beach.

On arrival on the scene we found the local ski-boat Diligo capsized and washed onto a sand bank in the surfline at East Beach.

One man, aged in his 50’s, was found safe on the beach suffering minor injuries and his friend, the skipper of the boat, a man aged in his 60’s, was missing in the surf after their boat had capsized in the 3 to 4 meter swells in the Kowie River Mouth harbour exit.

During a search the body of the man was located in shallow surf at East Beach and recovered by our NSRI rescue swimmers. He was declared deceased by paramedics.

The deceased, who was from Johannesburg but now living in Port Alfred, has been taken into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.
