THE WAR BETWEEN UBER TAXIS VS METERED TAXIS IN SOUTH AFRICA

9 Sep 2017 : In South Africa, we have seen an increase in violence against Uber drivers in an ongoing turf war that was started by metered taxi drivers at different zones around Johannesburg. The metered-taxi drivers say that Uber drivers are stealing business from them and that their service is illegal.



NO-GO Zones:

15 areas have been declared no-go zones for Uber drivers after the conflict between metered-taxi operators escalated this week. Metered-taxi drivers have started a turf war at pick-up points such as Gautrain stations, malls and parts of the CBDs of Johannesburg, Centurion and Pretoria.

  • Summit Club in Hillbrow
  • Royal Park in Joubert Park
  • CBD (specifically around the Carlton Centre)
  • All Gautrain stations (Park Station, Rosebank, Sandton, Marlboro, Centurion, Hatfield and Pretoria)
  • Eastgate Mall
  • Mall of Africa
  • Southgate Mall
