21 Apr 2017, Mossel Bay: Breathtaking photo of a 3,5m long White shark that jumped out of the water near the Great Brak River.

The photo was taken last week when two research boats, one of White Shark Africa and the other of Oceans Research, were near the Great Brak River coastline.

Gibbs Kuguru, captain of White Shark Africa's boat, said the research team was on the lookout for Smooth hammerhead sharks when the white shark made its appearance.

"Although we see sharks everyday, we were still surprised when the beautiful animal appeared so suddenly," he said.

Dylan Irion of Oceans Research captured the leap on camera and posted it on White Shark Africa's Facebook page.

According to Kuguru, it is not uncommon for sharks to jump out of the water. "It's natural behavior and totally bounces away. Those who experience it are really happy."

White Shark Africa and Oceans Research conduct research, and aim for shark conservation.

What an amazing white shark breach, captured by our scientist in residence, Dylan Irion, from our research vessel.
