12 Mar 2018, Winterton, KwaZulu Natal: According to the Ladysmith Herald, a Winterton worker was stuck in a mielie silo for just over 9 hours this morning.

Okhahlamba Fire and Rescue were called out and under the guidance of senior superintendent Freddy Halgreen, the crew assessed the scene.

After 4 hours the rescue party managed to free the man. "We had to decant the silo and build a structure around him so that the maize around him, that was crushing him, could be removed and also so that no more maize could fall around him," said JP Strydom, who had assisted the crew in the rescue.

The patient was treated by ER24 from Pietermaritzburg and due to the condition of the patient after being assessed and stabilised by paramedics, a Med-Evac chopper was called to scene to airlift the patient to be taken to hospital for further treatment.
