23 Apr 2017, Gauteng: On duty Gauteng EMS staff shot at. On Saturday the 22nd April 2017 at about 18h30, Paramedics were returning to Cullinan EMS Base when they came across what looked like a dead body lying on the side of the road.

The EMS crew stopped to assist and whilst they were busy trying to attend to the patient, two vehicles appeared from nowhere and randomly shot at the direction of the Ambulance.

The ambulance was hit by bullets, and Paramedics had to escape on foot, abandoning the patient and the ambulance.



Three other people were also shot, two fatally and declared dead on scene. The MEC has instructed EMS personnel to arrange police escorts when responding to violent-related incidences and know hot spot areas.

The MEC is deeply concerned about the safety of EMS staff and urges communities to work with law enforcement urgencies to bring perpetrators to book.

The department has arranged other Post Traumatic Stress Counselling for affected EMS officials. The incident happened at the entrance to Refiloe township in Cullinan.
