30 Jul 2017, South Africa: The statistics showed that despite popular belief, minibus taxis are not the root cause of fatalities on the country’s roads. She noted that the age group most affected in road accidents was between the ages of 25 and 39, while most accidents occurred on the weekend.

TOTAL CAR CRASHES - VEHICLES:
(2015 - 2016)
Small motor vehicles accounted for 47.9%
Light Delivery Vehicles at 22.7%
Mini buses at 10.1%
Trucks at 4.1%

TOTAL CAR CRASHES - HUMANS:
Passengers accounted for 38.3% of road accidents
Pedestrians at 34.9%
Cyclists for 2.8%.



TOTAL CAR CRASHES - VEHICLES:
Easter Weekend (2016 - 2017)
Small motor vehicles accounted for 49%
Light Delivery Vehicles at 20%
Mini buses at 7.6%
Busses at 1.1%

Most fatal crashes happened in the after-hours of the day, especially from 18h00 to 22h00 to the early hours.

About 34% of the daily crashes happened between 18h00 to 22h00. However, other peaks were recorded between 01h00 – 02h00, 06h00 & 07h00 – 08h00 and 11h00 – 12h00.
