MASS PROTEST ACTION ALERT: THREATS OF A MASS PROTEST ACTION IN HERMANUS TAKEN SERIOUSLY
News, Accidents, Robberies & Incidents | Western Cape |

27 May 2018, Hermanus: Threats were received of a Mass Protest Action in Hermanus tomorrow, Monday 28 May 2018. SAPS are taking these threats as very serious and mass deployment of Officers will be deployed to the Hermanus area.

1. SAPS are taking the threats of protest action proposed by Zwehile Renewal for tomorrow very seriously.

2. Meetings are currently in progress, authorities are doing everything possible to resolve and avert from taking place.

The DA in the Western Cape claims the recent wave of violent protests and land invasions are the work of the ANC in an attempt to destabilise the province. This month alone, there have been 39 incidents of riotous behaviour and vandalism, as well as more than 60 land invasions.

This has led to the destruction of private and municipal property, train carriages, buses and cars. DA Chief Whip in Provincial Parliament, Mark Wiley, says the recent protests appear to mirror those following the 2009 general election when the ANC allegedly promised to make the province ungovernable following the DA's win in the Western Cape.

"The question needs to be asked: such a diversified and broad-based attack within the province against infrastructure and so-called service delivery matters."

"The Western Cape by every measure, from the Auditor General to the Impact Report which is a presidential monitoring department indicate that service delivery in the Western Cape is by the best anywhere in the country, so why are all these so-called service delivery protests taking place in the Western Cape."

"The ANC in the province has rejected the DA's suggestion and says citizens are expressing their unhappiness over the pace of service delivery."

ANC Western Cape Spokesperson, Yonela Diko: "The way the province and the city has been governed by the DA, at least since 2006 when they took over the city and 2009 when they took over the province, has always been unsustainable. The DA has always wanted to maintain the inequalities and racial divides with the consent of black people, that's always been a ticking time bomb and so we reject that accusation with the contempt it deserves."
