30 Apr 2018, Strand, Western Cape: Police are investigating a case of arson after a group of protesters torched the municipal offices in Macassar, near Strand.

Western Cape police spokesperson, Noloyiso Rwexana, says the protesters came to the offices to find the local councillor. She says the demonstrators then decided to torch the building when they couldn't find him.

It's still unclear at this stage why the protesters were looking for the councilor.

Rwexana says the situation in the area is calm at the moment: "According to information, a group of about 30 people were looking for the local councillor. When they were informed that the councillor was not available, they were unhappy and torched the building. No injuries were reported during this incident and no one has been arrested."
