1 Jul 2017, Hout Bay: Cape Town traffic officials have closed off various major routes to Hout Bay area after residents embarked on a violent protest this on Saturday morning.

The City of Cape Town's Xanthea Limberg confirms that residents of the informal settlements are protesting about developments of a formal housing project that is affecting them negatively.

Limberg concedes that other issues such as service delivery have also been flagged by the community of Imizamo Yethu in previous months.

Law enforcement's have been placed at the protest to try and calm the already tense protest action says Limberg.

Limberg says the city is in the first phase of the re-blocking project. She says the delay has been largely because of the terrain they are working from.

Western Cape SAPS are monitoring the Protest Action in Hout Bay. Police say the situation under control but all access routes to Hout Bay affected.
