9 May 2017, VAAL TRIANGLE: The Golden Highway is reportedly closed between the N12 and Union Road this morning because of on-going protests in Eldorado Park in Johannesburg.

Several roads closed, rocks placed on roads and burning of tyres. Roads affected include the R558 and the Golden Highway. According to eNCA, it has also since spread to Ennerdale and Freedom Park, with various roads closed.

Residents have vowed to continue protesting until their demands for adequate housing and employment are met.

Since yesterday morning a group of angry residents have barricaded roads with burning tyres and looted shops including a filling station. Police have arrested at least 12 people for public violence.

The Eldorado Park Business Forum says they don’t condone the looting of shops, but people need to take into consideration that 71% of the people in the area are unemployed.

They say protests will continue today and have criticised police for reacting with violence to their protests.

Last night a police helicopter was hovering over the area and a heavy contingent of officers was patrolling the Golden Highway.
