30 Mar 2018, Isipingo, KwaZulu Natal: As the Easter long weekend conmenced, tragedy struck at the Isipingo Pilgrim Informal settlement where a grandmother and her two grandchildren, twin siblings, were killed in a fire ripped that through the dwellings, razing 9 homes in the early hours of this morning.

The man believed to have started the fire in a fit of rage was found hanged from a tree nearby taking the death toll to four.

A Community Participation representative from Ward 90 rushed to the scene where the homes were ablaze. She said emergency services responded swiftly and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

The representative added that the various services worked in the pitch darkness to assist the residents. The injured were rushed to hospital.

According to information, a couple had a dispute leading to the enraged boyfriend setting fire to his girlfriend's home. The fire quickly spread in the closely built homes gutting 9 residences and killing the innocent gran and her two grandkids. The deceased were said to be unrelated to the couple.

It is alleged that the man realised the horror of his impulsive act and hanged himself from a nearby tree. His body was discovered when light set in.

Community organisations and the local councillor's office is rallying aid to reach out to the displaced families.

Anyone interested in offering support can contact the Cllr's office on 031 902 9578.
