7 Feb 2018, Gauteng: Yesterday, community members attacked one of our Emergency Manager Services (EMS) ambulances in Honeydew.
The incident occurred while EMS paramedics responded to an emergency maternity case in the area. While the medics where rushing the pregnant patient to hospital, a brick was lunged into the back of the ambulance breaking the back window.
The reason for the attack is unknown. No suspects have been identified, however the Department of Public Safety EMS has opened a case at the Honeydew Police Station for malicious damage to the City’s property.
I commend the paramedics for safely transporting the patient to hospital, despite the incident. Continue reading below...
This attack against EMS is absolutely appalling and unacceptable. It is not only an attack on the City, but on the most vulnerable residents in the City.
The damage to the ambulance means that the City will be one ambulance down while repairs are being made, which hinders the efficient service delivery the Department strives for.
This attack comes after another attack took place late last year in Cosmo City where paramedics were robbed.
We will continue to work with our community members to ensure they understand that these kinds of crimes does them much disservice and they should work closely with us to eradicate this criminal behaviour.
Members of the public are urged to call JMPD on 011 375 9511 should they have any information pertaining to this case or any information regarding attacks on EMS personnel
