22 Sep 2017, Cape Town: Approximately 59 people were left injured this morning when a transporter and taxi collided at the Spine and Eisleben Road intersection in Mitchells Plain in the Western Cape.

ER24 paramedics, along with Metro, Life Healthcare and other services received the call at approximately 09h00 and immediately responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, paramedics found the transported lying on its side while the taxi was found upright in the intersection.



Occupants from the taxi and transported were found lying all around the scene. Local authorities began to close off the road while paramedics set up a triage area.

Paramedics began assessing the patients, finding that their injuries ranged from minor to moderate.

Fortunately, no fatalities were found on the scene.

The patients were treated for their injuries and were thereafter transported by various services to nearby hospitals for urgent treatment. Officials said that Spine Road, Mitchell’s Plain had to be close for traffic between Merrydale and Park Avenue due to this accident at Eisleben Road.

Western Cape police spokesman‚ Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut‚ said the circumstances surrounding the accident are being investigated.

"Two police officers and 43 prisoners were transported to hospital for treatment. The conditions of the taxi occupants is yet to be determined‚" said Traut.
