5 Sep 2017, Middelburg: Three women were killed and ten others injured this morning when a bakkie rear-ended another on the R555, approximately 10km outside of Middelburg in Mpumalanga. ER24 Paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene at 07h31 to find 1 bakkie on the side of the road, the other 1 approximately 100 metres away in the middle of the road.
Several bodies were found lying around the scene and along the road. Paramedics assessed the patients and found that three women had sustained fatal injuries.
Nothing more could be done for them and they were declared dead on the scene. Ten other patients were found on the scene.
Assessments showed that two were in a critical condition while eight others had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.
Paramedics treated the patients and provided the two critically injured with advanced life support interventions.
Once treated, one of the critically injured patients was airlifted by the ER24 Oneplan Helicopter to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
The remaining patients were transported to various hospitals in the area for further treatment.
It is understood that several people had been on the rear of the one bakkie and had been ejected off when the two vehicles collided.
The exact cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
