Rescue services had to use specialized equipment to free the woman from the vehicle, an operation lasting one hour.
Once freed, paramedics treated the woman and provided her with advanced life support interventions. Shortly after treatment, the patient was transported to Mediclinic Pietermaritzburg for urgent treatment.
While on route, the patient’s vital signs rapidly diminished. CPR and advanced life support interventions were once again initiated in an effort to revive the patient.
Paramedics arrived at the hospital and handed over the patient to the hospital staff. Unfortunately, after a short time, the patient finally succumbed to her injuries. Nothing more could be done and she was declared dead.
The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.
