17 Jun 2017, Durban: One person has died while twelve others have been left injured in a horrific collision on Chris Hani (North Coast) Road this morning.

Crisis Medical Paramedics were called to the scene near to the Queen Nandi Drive intersection at approximately 5am on Saturday.

Reports from the scene suggest that the driver of a Volkswagen Polo hatchback, lost control of the vehicle at high speed, whilst traveling on the south bound side, causing the vehicle to careen across the center median, before colliding head on with a minibus taxi on the north bound side of the roadway.

Eye witness reports allege the driver of the Volkswagen fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction shortly after the collision.

Twelve commuters from the minibus sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate, with one commuter having sustained fatal injuries and unfortunately being declared deceased on arrival of Paramedics.

The injured were treated and stabilized on scene, before being taken by ambulances to various nearby receiving medical facilities for further care.

The facts surrounding the incident are speculative and form subject of a South African Police Services investigation.
