13 Jul 2017, Sandton, Johannesburg: At approximately 06h49 on Thursday 13 July 2017, Netcare 911 responded to reports of a serious collision on the Grayston bridge over Katherine Drive in Sandton. Paramedics from Netcare 911 and other ambulance services, the JMPD and the Sandton Fire Department all responded to the incident.

Reports from the scene indicate that a bakkie overturned and no other vehicles were damaged. Witnesses were at the scene to give statements to the police.

The driver alleged that another vehicle, which was stationary, suddenly pulled out in front of the bakkie which swerved to avoid it and then lost control.

The incident and preceding events will form part of a police investigation. Paramedics assessed and attended to 14 people at the scene.

Three from inside the vehicle were fortunate to escape without injury, while the eleven that were alleged to be on the back of the bakkie sustained a range of injuries: one female had sustained a severe head injury, two had sustained moderate to serious injuries and eight had sustained relatively minor injuries.

Two of the injured were attended to by Advanced Life Support paramedics at the scene and were administered analgesic medication to control their pain.

The injured were transported by Netcare 911 and other ambulances to different hospitals in the area. Peak morning traffic was severely affected by the incident.
