28 May 2018, Bloemfontein, Free State: Five people were killed and another three sustained serious injuries in an horrific accident on the N8 between Bloemfontein and Botshabelo on Saturday yesterday evening.
Emergency services received calls for the accident at around 18h00 and responded to the scene from both Bloemfontein and Botshabelo.
On arrival they found debris from the wreckages of the four vehicles involved scattered over an area of about 150 m, obstructing the entire east-bound carriageway.
Two of the deceased victims were also found to have been ejected from the vehicle they were travelling in.
The injured persons were treated by staff from Free State EMS before they were transported to Botshabelo hospital for further care.
A large scale search was launched in the adjacent veld to ensure that no other victims were ejected from any of the vehicles, but no further victims were found.
The SAPS has opened an investigation into the cause of the accident. Traffic on the route was heavily affected for approximately four hours whilst the scene was cleared.
