8 May 2018, Free State: In an horrific accident on the N1, approximately 30km north of the Verkeerdevlei Toll Plaza one adult and one child was killed and sixteen others sustained injuries ranging from moderate to critical when the minibus they were travelling in left the road, overturned several times and came to rest in a river.
Emergency workers from various services responded swiftly to the scene to assist in rescuing the trapped victims.
Patients had to be freed from the wreckage that was lying on its side and partially submerged, using jaws-of-life.
Emergency workers from Free State EMS, Free State College of Emergency Care, Life Rosepark Hospital, Mangaung Fire & Rescue Services, SAPS, Trauma Response Africa and other services joined hands in this extremely complicated and challenging rescue effort.
Patients were treated on scene for their injuries before being transported to various hospitals in Winburg, Welkom and Bloemfontein.
The cause of the accident is being investigated by the SAPS.
